Background

The Samtse College of Education was founded as the first Teacher Training Institute (TTI) in the country in 1968. It was inaugurated by late His Majesty the Third King, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. This day is observed as the institute foundation day every year. It began with an initial enrolment of 41 students.

The college is located on a thickly wooded grassy slope from whose vantage point one can take contemplative view of the mighty Indian plains. It spreads over a total campus area of 25.72 acres of land. It is located at a convenient distance to the east of main town, and well known for being aesthetically and intellectually congenial to learning and growth. Although it is geographically secluded and inconspicuous, thanks to internet, SCE can now communicate globally.

The college is one of the premier educational institutions in the country which provides training to primary, secondary and postgraduate teachers. It also caters a number of in-service programs at B. Ed primary and postgraduate levels. With the introduction of the Bachelor of Education in 1983, the erstwhile TTI was renamed as the National Institute of Education (NIE), and its name was later changed to Samtse College of Education since 2008.
